About 85% of your hair is growing at any given time while the remaining is “resting”. These resting hairs will fall out regularly, causing us to lose somewhere between 50 and 100 strands of hair every day. While this is normal, finding clumps of hair falling out while shampooing or styling your hair is not.

If you are a woman who has begun to notice you are losing your hair, don’t be worried or even embarrassed, you aren’t alone. It is estimated that somewhere around 60% of women will experience some type of hair loss during their life. Once you have discovered the problem, try looking for the cause. From here there may be a simple solution or something more complex. Some of the most common causes of hair loss in women include:

  • genetics

  • hormones including issues with the thyroid, estrogen levels, or high androgen

  • an allergic reaction

  • stress

  • high fever

  • chemotherapy

With the exception of chemotherapy and possibly genetics, there are changes that can be made to impact the process of thinning hair. Recognizing the signs and taking action is the best way to curb the influence of thinning hair.

The Solutions

With problems related to hair loss in women, there are a few solutions that can be implemented. Start out by eating the foods that will promote healthy hair. This includes walnuts, sweet potatoes, eggs, salmon, spinach, and blueberries. All of these contain much of the vitamins and minerals that are needed to maintain the health of your hair.

When diet doesn’t do the trick, there are hair loss medicines that can be used geared specifically towards women. Choose the products that are approved by the FDA. These have the potential to not only slow hair loss, but also help the hair grow back for some that use it. The problem with this product is that as soon as you stop using it, the benefits are lost. There are also laser devices that have been used on a salon and home level to help promote hair growth. There were positive results seen in those who used the product between 2 and 4 months.

Thinning hair is a struggle many people deal with, but finding the solution as fast as possible is the easiest way to combat it. Be aware of your hair, looking for the signs of thinning. If you notice any out of the ordinary signs of hair loss, get to the bottom of the cause as soon as possible to prevent it from going any further.
