Are You Making This SPF Mistake?

Are You Making This SPF Mistake?

Spring is the best time of year! It’s a time for growth and change as we head into the warmest months of the year.

But did you know that spring can also bring danger? Many of us forget how powerful the sun’s rays are even when the weather isn’t sweltering!

How many days of the year do you incorporate SPF into your beauty routine? If your answer isn’t “365”, it’s time to revamp!

Does SPF REALLY Matter?

Simply put, yes! It absolutely does matter.

“SPF” stands for “Sun Protection Factor” which is determined by comparing the amount of time it takes uvb-protected skin to burn to the same depth as non-protected skin.

Basically, the higher the SPF rating, the more protection your skin has from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Your face, ears, and hands are exposed to the light every day, and unless you live somewhere without any  light at all, then chances are that you need to take some precaution when it comes to your skin.

How Much, How Often?

You certainly don’t need to lather up like you’re going to the beach every day, unless you actually are.

Most dermatologists recommend something with an spf between 20-30 for daily or frequent use, and something with a much higher SPF for prolonged and direct exposure.

Though, to get a better idea of what will work best for your skin type and exposure level see your dermatologist or esthetician.

If you have very fair skin and burn easily, consider using a product with a higher SPF to ensure that your skin isn’t being damaged.

If you live somewhere with a lot of year-round sunlight, you may also consider products with higher SPF if you spend more time outside.

But… What If I Wear Makeup?

You’re in luck!

Not only can you wear sunscreen of any SPF level under your makeup, there are a ton of cosmetics with SPF already in them!

From foundations and cc creams, to bb creams and tinted moisturizers, chances are that there is something out there for everyone.

Even if you prefer a full-coverage liquid foundation, there is most certainly a solution that will help to protect your skin from damaging and potentially cancerous sun-exposure.

Schedule with your esthetician to learn about the best products for your skin and sun exposure level. They can help you to understand your skin type as well as make recommendations for the best products for your needs.
